Dry or Wet Cat Food
Which should you feed your cat?
Cats can be picky eaters, and even when there's a variety of food available for them, your first question may still not be what brand to buy, but which type to feed them: dry or wet?
Scientifically there may be an answer, and a vet may be able to provide you with a better suggestion. But from my point of view it is best to have both types at hand.
What I end up doing is setting two separate plates; one with hard and one with soft food. This way they can decide what they want to eat.
Two of our cats, Aria and Luna, since they were young have preferred hard food. Every once in a while we run out, or just to see if they want to try it, I offer them the soft canned one. They just smell it and don't even touch it.
Our outdoor cats prefer the soft one. When we take out a plate with soft food on one half and hard on the other, they first eat the soft one. Two of them though even when they were still being breast fed by the mother I've seen chewing the hard one and eating it without a problem.
The cats in the main living area eat from both. When the soft one is done, or they don't like the flavor, they go for the hard one. Other times they just lick off the gravy / juice. I buy the box of cans assorted with four different flavors. This way don't eat the same one over and over. The hard food brand I do keep buying from the same
Canned food also comes in patty and shreds form. The curios thing is they like the patté way more than the shredded.
If you want to experiment for yourself it is also important to know that cats may like one brand of hard food but not all of them. The same as with wet food; if they eat it they may still only one particular flavor / type.
Just because they don't like one type from one brand doesn't mean they won't like the same type from a different brand. They can also like one particular flavor and not a different one from the same brand. This also applies to treats. Some will like turkey flavor and not beef flavor; catnip flavor and not milk flavor.
I remember our cat Gori would only eat ham at first. The way I eventually got him to try the other food was by placing pieces of ham on top of the soft food. One day he finished the ham on top and keep on biting into the other food. We still give him some turkey ham every once in a while, and we don't he just eats from the regular menu. Oddly he doesn't eat treats.
As you see, in a way it's convenient that they are able to eat from a variety.
It's a matter of trying and seeing what your cat likes. Most likely they will stick with what you feed them at first.
